I've met a member of people who said they didn't enjoy living in Germany. I'm not surprised to hear that they wanted to go back to the U.S. But I'm surprised to hear that they didn't like living in Europe. If you plan to live in Germany, I would travel and really explore German history and culture. It's a truly beautiful and amazing country. I lived there for 3 months. Make friends. Go out. Explore what's there. Enjoy your second country and make the best of it. You will never call it your "Heimat" but it is your home for now. And if you ever need a break from Germany, another country isn't far away (think: Switzerland!).
