I know a lot of people who like to work out but aren't a member of a gym. I'm the opposite. I work out, yes, but I love the gym. And at my age I don't even have to pay for it (thank you, Silver Sneakers). Just to be clear. I don't go for yoga classes or spin classes or anything like that. When I go I sometimes swim but mostly I avail myself of the weights. If you say "I'll NEVER join a gym," here are a few reasons to reconsider:
- The weather is always warm and dry.
- Others will hold you accountable.
- Trainers are available for advice
- You can meet new people (if you're into that sort of thing).
- Free child care if you need it.
Please don't get all offended if I say that the gym is a great place to get fit. It doesn't mean I don't support people who would rather work out at home. It means that the gym is the best thing that I have personally found to give the best results when it comes to weight training. There is something magical about all the new people I'm seeing in the gym. They are taking one small step everyday in the direction of making themselves who they want to be. If you are part of those who actually follow through in 2026 with your fitness goals, I applaud you. You are amazing. You should be congratulated. There is nothing magical about the month of January. There is, however, something magical about taking one small step to becoming the person you want to be. It's not about a particular month of the year. It's about every day.
There is no secret.
Exercise.
And lay off the fries.
The end.
