Good hydration is absolutely necessary to exercise, and also ridiculously easy. Drink water when you are thirsty. For me, that's constantly. As much as possible, avoid drinks with sugar or extra calories. During a race, drink a little water at each water stop. Again, the rule of thumb of is, "Drink when you are thirsty."
Works for me.
