A Surprise Discovery in Sharpsburg

It's hard to believe that one place can hold so much history. That's Sharpsburg for you. Ironically, a visit to a cemetery was the highlight of my recent trip there.

Imagine locating the memorial marker for both your great-great-great-great grandfather Col. John Miller (born Oct. 13, 1787 in Sharpsburg) and your great-great-great-great-great grandfather David Miller (born Dec. 5, 1734 in Germany ).

It probably took about two seconds before I thought, "This is a very special day, Dave."

Invaluable to me was the time I spent in Hagerstown, the seat of Washington County, Maryland.

The Western Maryland Room at the public library was a godsend. It has a wealth of information.

I also spent some time at the Washington County Historical Society.

To the staff of both places, thank you so much for looking into the John Miller family for me. The records you shared helped a great deal with my research. Your insights gave me several leads to follow. I am truly grateful for your expertise and generosity.

To be continued ....
