Exactly 160 years ago today, the 157th New York stepped onto Maryland soil on their way to Gettysburg.
The men began to sing an old hymn:
We go the way that leads to God,
The way that saints have ever trod,
So let us leave this sinful shore,
For realms where we shall die no more,
We're going home, we're going home,
We're going home to die no more.
A week later, one in six of them would do just that.
This is the price of war.
