Every professor has their WIP, though I'm not sure if this stands for work-in-progress or work-in-perpetuity. In fact, I thought of calling this blog post "The Monster in My Desktop" or even "My Current Bout of Literary Masochism."
Some of you know that I am currently writing a book for lay people on how to read and enjoy their New Testament. You may think that the process of writing comes easily for me. Hardly. Nothing creative is done by committee. It's just you and your keyboard.
Writing is a mystery. But when the urge to write strikes, you cannot escape it. Someone has said that writing is turning blood into ink. All it asks is the time to do it.
The day is coming, probably sooner rather than later, when I will write my last piece. Am I ready to have my heart weighed at the Bema Seat of Christ? Have I pleased the God I love? Is this as far as I should have gone? Only the One who made me knows.
John Wooden was the coach of the UCLA Bruins.
In a book called They Call Me Coach, he gives this three-statement piece of advice:
Talent is God-given. Be humble.
Fame is man-given. Be thankful.
Conceit is self-given. Be careful.
That's why we must walk so sensitively with our God. He not only has a plan for our lives that includes length, it includes depth. May he grant us daily a cooperative spirit to work within his power to do his will until he calls us home.
