Publishing is a touchy thing because everyone has an opinion. But is there anyone out there who would disagree with me that there are too many books being published today? The book market clearly seems oversaturated. Far more books are being published than could possibly be helpful. The entire publishing industry seems to be wedded to a policy of overproduction. Sometimes I get books from publishers that I simply cannot believe made it into print. I say this as someone who dedicates a significant amount of his time to reading.
I can already hear some of you telling me that there are worse things in life than a glut in book production and that we are actually fortunate to have this problem. You are probably right. Maybe I'm just getting ornery in my dotage. Besides, good readers will continue to curate their book choices. So problem solved, right? Still, in my opinion, there are too many poor quality books being published today. This is true not just for books but for knowledge in general. And I have the same problem with music. (Don't get me started on cable TV shows and YouTube videos.)
Enough already, Dave. You're starting to sound like a crotchety old geezer. You're meandering. We're not having an existential crisis, now are we?
