Studies show that men who live into their 70s and 80s suffer from various infirmities and at least one chronic illness. Their life structure consists of only a small territory, a few significant relationships, and a preoccupation with immediate bodily needs. Life in this period may include loss of all meaning. A man in his 70s and 80s knows that death is coming. At this stage, part of the work is to start a new era, to create a new basis for living. If he maintains his vitality, he may remain engaged in social life. He may also be able to be an example to others of wisdom and personal mobility. In the end, he must come finally to terms with his self -- knowing it and living it reasonably well -- and being willing to give it up.
