Languages Are Funny

This morning I'm reviewing my Spanish grammar. Latin American Spanish, that is. Although the structure and essentials of grammar are the same, the pronunciation and use of certain words are not. Such divergences are hardly limited to Spanish. Anyone who has been to Britain know they say "boot" for "trunk." Think caro in Latin America and coche in Spain. Where I live, here's what you hear. Can you tell me what these terms mean in Standard English? (Some are more obvious than others.)

  • paints
  • i'moan
  • fitty
  • caint
  • tars
  • fixin
  • memaw
  • we'uns

Languages are so funny!
