As a newbie lifter, I'm discovering through trial and error that nothing can be accomplished without intensity. Intensity is when you perform a set right up close to or beyond the capability of your muscles. You can perform as many sets as you want, but in the absence of sufficient training intensity you won't see any appreciable results. Yes, volume is important. But intensity is the primary driver of muscle growth when push comes to shove. You can work out hard or you can work out long. But you can't do both.
