Intrinsic Versus Extrinsic Motivation for Exercise

I'm no cognitive scientist, but it seems to me that intrinsic motivation is much more powerful than extrinsic motivation. Even if you believe that guilting your loved ones into exercising will produce results, any change in habit isn't likely to last if they aren't doing it for reasons that matter to them. In general (though not always), shame is an ineffective motivator.
